Hi! I'm Magnus

"Practi-techno DevOps Academic"

I work as an Associate Professor at Roskilde University where I get to design and develop; new tech and people-focused tools for practitioners; server infrastructure for local InfoSec projects; local LLM testing and Open Source Enterprise tools.
The best part is that I get to publish my results!
Often I get the notion that I am way more practical than academics and more academic than practitioners, but I do see opportunity for growth in both aspects whenever I take a hands-on approach with research projects in practice.

About me

I am an all-out nice guy with a passion for working with people and technology, especially Linux-based infrastructure, to enable the coolest and most delicious technical solutions!
I know how to build most things from scratch and I love the challenge of figuring out how it fits into your organisation!

I know a lot but I also know that I do not know everything, and I know that I can start learning mostly everything as long as it has a purpose and someone finds it useful!
Check out how I do what I do!

Job #5

5th job: Associate Professor at the Department of People and Technology

A big part of my job as an Associate Professor is to network and connect “reality” to the university and its students and researchers. Always evolving my teaching based on my research, I have so far tallied the following accomplishments:

  • awarded best reviewer of the SCIS/IRIS conference
  • pulled funding for the GameForGreen research project: 2.0 million Euros; Principal Investigator for the initiation of the project
  • pulled funding for the IntelliGrid research project: 1.5 million Euros
  • decided on crucial directions for the SCIS/IRIS conference as a Boardmember and Chairperson of the IRIS board 2020-2023
  • published 4 high-impact journal articles: SJIS, EJIS, Electronic Markets, and Communications of the ACM
  • handled more than 2000 paper submissions as review coordinator and close collaborator for the Conference Chairs for ICIS2018
  • co-lead the work group for the new Master of Digital Transformation at Roskilde University: increasing Master applications with 200%
  • chaired and organised the Danish Project Management Conference 2016-2019

2015-2018
Assistant Professor
Roskilde University. Roskilde, Denmark

Job #4

4th job: Assistant Professor at the Department of Communications, Business and Information Technology

My job as Assistant Professor focused on learning the craft of creating research projects and ensuring funding, while learning how to combine and develop teaching based on research. I had the following accomplishments:

  • ensured 80.000,- DKK in external funding for a Design Science Research project on how to design a tool for evaluating value gained from knowledge networks, useful for growth network organisations who promote innovation in local companies and communities: Thy Erhvervsforum
  • ensured 40.000,- DKK in external funding for an Action Research project on how to teach UX design to technical staff in an SMV in Trekroner: Chymeia
  • published several conferences in Design Science Research and the Information Systems disciplines
  • create my own module on IT architecture; focusing on practical tools and skills that the students needed to work with in practice to ensure that they were able to enter the labour market

2014-2014
Temp. Assistant Professor
Roskilde University. Roskilde, Denmark

Job #3

3rd job: Temporary Assistant Professor at the Department of Communications, Business and Information Technology

My first full-time job right after my PhD defense; teaching full time giving me the opportunity to increase my facilitation, speaking and presentation skills.

During my 6 months I managed to:

  • revamp how the bachelor students at informatics engaged with practice for their bachelor module
  • design a practice-oriented UX course with a focus on developing prototypes over 3 iterations

2010-2010
IT security intern
CSU Roskilde. Roskilde, Denmark

Job #2

2nd job: IT security intern

During my internship, I spearheaded a much needed assessment of the security practices and established policies for hardware and software solutions for accessibility-impaired citizens.

My main achievement here was to build a bridge between the local IT support and management that resulted in stronger awareness of providing resources for the IT support to better adhere to security best practices.

2007-2009
IT supporter
Roskilde University. Roskilde, Denmark

IT supporter

1st job: Technical supporter for Apple and Macintosh servers and desktops

Beginning as a student helper I managed the backup servers (Retrospect) for the Macintosh computers at our department, ranging about 10 users. I had the opportunity to familiarize myself with the basics of Unix commands and server level hardware and software as well as solving technical troubleshooting tasks such as repairing work stations and arranging and scheduling backups on a weekly basis.

From this job began my own interest in Unix-like systems and ensured that I could navigate later on in my Master of Computer Science where I could setup SVN servers, use LaTeX and got into Emacs. I also learned the value of networking and treating everyone around me as equal human beings and listen and solve problems in a calm manner.

A selection of my projects

The Game For Green Project

Borne by the need for increasing awareness of green behaviour and more responsible power consumption, the Game For Green project is a 2.5 million Euro project that designs, constructs and builds a game engine that supports serious game creation for companies, organisations and municipalities that wish to educate their employees, users and/or citizens for more responsible actions that align with green values. The project was sponsored by the Innovation Fund Denmark and started in May 2023.

My main accomplishments were as initial principal investigator (project manager) who wrote the application and ensured organising and facilitating the vision for the 8 collaborating contributors of the project: Roskilde University, Actee, Provice, Implement Group, HOFOR, Municipalities of Høje Taastrup, Vejle and Vallensbæk.

I have never been solely responsible for handling so many organisational actors with such a large amount of grant money, and it has truly been a learning experience on so many levels.

Case Study

The IntelliGrid Project

The world is consuming more and more energy. Pioneered in 2020, the IntelliGrid project was backed by Interreg EU with 2 million Euros. I played a key role in leading the design and development of our app and deploying it into the Danish Households, reporting and following up on user reported bugs and issues. The project was widely successful and paved the way for innovative products that took off during the pricing hike of energy prices in late 2022!

Case Study

Agile Team 360 evaluation

In which I performed a 360 evaluation of a successful agile development project by interviewing team members, managers, and clients. Produced and designed an interactive timeline with central events and their causal consequences for the team’s process and performance throughout the project lifecycle.

Knowledge Network Assessments

In collaboration with Thy Erhvervsforum I designed, constructed and evaluated an easy-to-use tool for evaluating the health of a knowledge network.

Knowledge Networks are an essential part of sharing experiences and building innovation competences for organisations where select employees participate in monthly to annual meetups with other organisations to discuss and share matters.

Especially for Small to Medium Enterprises reaching out to others and connecting in physical face-to-face networks has shown to provide a huge boost in productivity and growth.

With the knowledge network assessment tool members and facilitators alike can assess the health of a network in order to continuously improve and grow the network with the aim of producing value.

Case Study

UX design process evaluation

For a minor chemical SME I performed a UX evaluation of an existing product by teaching the IT development team how to perform usability evaluations. Through the usability evaluation I proposed a “design system” as guidelines for further design in order to avoid additional problematic UX design decisions and furthermore developed the idea of a serious game called “The Enterprise Compass”; designed for SMEs to understand the necessity of both exploiting their market and investigating and exploring their opportunities.

Case Study

Regional Electronic Ambulance Records

In 2010 multiple Danish Regions decided to digitise their ambulance records. But how? As part of my PhD I was the test and pilot manager of organising and evaluating various versions of how electronic ambulance records worked in real life scenarios in the ambulances.

It gave me tremendeous insight into how real life work was enacted in the ambulances and the intricacies of testing, preparing and evaluating how IoT and mobile devices needed to seamlessly interact to support tasks.

The learnings of the pilot project paved the way for the 2016 national tender of electronic ambulance records in the whole of Denmark, still in use to this day.
